Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
About the Exam
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE), overseen by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), stands as a critical component of admissions criteria for numerous graduate schools across the United States, Canada, and select other nations. Serving as a fundamental gateway to advanced degrees in fields such as business, law, and various academic disciplines, the GRE holds significant importance for prospective graduate students.
Designed to assess applicants’ verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing capabilities, the GRE provides graduate schools with a standardized framework for evaluating candidates’ readiness for advanced academic programs. By offering a comprehensive evaluation of these essential skills, the GRE aids graduate schools in making informed admissions decisions, ensuring that candidates possess the necessary aptitude and proficiency to excel in their chosen fields of study.
The Curriculum
The GRE curriculum consists of three core sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. These segments aim to assess crucial skills vital for success in graduate school endeavors. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning evaluate candidates’ capacity to comprehend and analyze written and numerical content, essential proficiencies for academic research and problem-solving. Meanwhile, Analytical Writing assesses candidates’ ability to articulate ideas convincingly and cogently in written form, a critical skill requisite for both academic and professional pursuits.
The GRE General Test typically spans approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes in duration. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections each allot 60 minutes for completion, while the Analytical Writing segment allows 30 minutes. This structured format ensures comprehensive evaluation across key skill areas, providing graduate school admissions committees with valuable insights into candidates’ academic readiness and potential for success in advanced academic endeavors.
- ETS imposes no specific eligibility criteria for the GRE, except for the requirement of holding an original passport to verify identity at the exam center. Regardless of age or educational qualifications, individuals are permitted to register for the GRE exam, ensuring accessibility to a wide range of candidates.
- For Indian students taking the GRE General Test, the application fee is 270 USD, approximately Rs. 22,500. Additionally, the GRE Subject Test costs $14,500 for students in India. Any modifications to the exam center or postponement incur additional fees.
- The GRE General Test is offered in two formats: computer-delivered test (CBT) and at-home test (HBT) at Prometric test centers worldwide. CBT is widely available year-round, while HBT is subject to limited availability. Candidates can register for the GRE General Test between December 1, 2023, and August 31, 2024.
